The Challenge
The Plymouth – Dakar was started by Devon stock-broker Julian Nowill in 2003 as a response to the Paris - Dakar rally.
The challenge is to drive a LHD car (for car read banger) for less than £100 (and spend less than £15 preparing it) from Plymouth to Dakar (Well actually we go a little further to Banjul in the Gambia). The journey is 4,000 miles long, including a crossing of the sahara and a minefield, taking about 3 weeks.
If you make it then the vehicle is auctioned for various charitable causes in Gambia. We are also trying to raise money for a UK charity.
After the first challenge in 2003, the 2004 challenge was even larger, and the 2005 challenge has a total of 200 teams entered on 4 separate leaving dates.
